ribbon cable problems, how to reinstall?

I have run into this problem before, but ribbon cables are just so impossible to put back into place, they just bend up. Is there a correct method to doing this?

The ribbon cables are the only problem I have left, and there are a few different ones on the board. The tiniest one seems to be the hardest.

Can I use dielectric grease? That would probably make a bigger mess than anything. This is the most frustrating part of electronics to me, there must be an easy way, perhaps some tweezer like tools..

you should never have to force a ribbon cable in. If you are finding them difficult because of size or just hard to push in, make sure the locking clip is all the way in the up position. also sometimes when you think you are putting it in is the right spot it may be a little too low or too high, try using a soldering tool magnifying glass (as to keep both hands free) just to reassure you are hitting the right spot. As for those really small cables, try a pair of very fine rubber tipped tweezers (just be careful not to pinch too hard) or if you can find them a pair of L tweezers, makes getting the ribbon level with the connector a little easier and easier to push forward. I wouldn't recommend using any sort of grease, like you said it will most likely make more of mess than anything. Best thing i can tell you is to take your time and be patient, don't try to hurry the end of the job or you'll end up with more of a hassle than you needed. and if your palms get sweaty dry them off and take a breather, it always seems to help.

hope this helps.

+ never get in a hurry when working on a laptop. If it gets frustrating, get up and get away from it, you've missed something. Clear your head before going back. Remember, if it's seems to hard, somethings wrong.

Hi thank you for your response, but I seem to still have trouble with the IR ribbon cable, its very small. I took a look at the top case that I am replacing, to see what hte condition of that ribbon cable was like, and the end was sort of torn off. Could a piece of the cable be stuck in the socket? If so, what options do I have? Its so tiny i can think of how to remove it. The top case I am replacing it with does have a complete IR cable. For now I may just ignore it and just try to get it up and running
