the most common reason is that a blank disc has not been inserted yet
UPDATE 8/30/17
Sounds like your drive has failed. Time to replace it as these things are almost impossible to repair once they fail. Here's how to do it:

Will it read a disk? What are you trying to do when you see the greyed out icon?
No it does not when I put a disk in it ejects it it still grated out when I put the disk in.
And which of the many different iMac's do you have as well as the OS-X version
