Did you format the drive GUID, Mac OS X extended and put a system on it? This stuff doesn't work like magic.

UPDATE

Your question is rather nebulous as to what you are doing and how and why.

If you have installed a new unformatted hard drive and are attempting to do an internet installation, you'll need to access Disk Utilities first and format the drive GUID and Mac OS X extended before attempting a system installation.

No I have not, but I think I came to the conclusion that the cord connecting the hd to computer needs to be replaced. I was able to restart in recovery mode and was going to install mountain lion, but there was no drive to install it to.
