Earpiece hot after screen swap (flex cable/earpiece/camera all work)

Hi

I recently had to put a new screen in my 6S and afterwards the earpiece and front camera didn't work. A classic fault!

So I got a new flex cable (front camera/prox sensor one etc) and fitted it tonight.

Now the good news is all the broken functionality is absolutely fine now, i.e. the front camera is fine, and the earpiece is working again, BUT, the earpiece is getting REALLY hot when the phone is awake.

I've opened it up and checked/reseated all that area around the flex cable/earpiece/front camera and looked for anything that could short or give a poor contact but it all seems fine. Reassembled it and same issue.

Everything works perfectly now except for the heat from the earpiece.

Help me Obi Wan Kenobi. You're my only hope!

Thanks for the reply!

New screen wasn't preassembled with flex/camera. I had to remove it from the old screen. Guessing I damaged it as there's no visible damage but after assembling with new screen/old flex the earpiece & camera failed (no heat).

I installed a new flex tonight and camera/earpiece now work but has the heat issue instead.

I've run sensor tests and neither are working so guessing the new flex cable is bad and I need a better one. This is possibly also the heat cause.

Screen isn't perfect as (like many people report) the bottom edge sticks up proud of the phone housing.

I still have the original flex cable so could try putting it back in but assume I'll lose the camera/earpiece use again with that unless it was just a bad connection. Possible I suppose.

Only other thing of note was I lost the tiny white square (about 2-3mm square) which sits in front of the ambient light sensor but this presumably shouldn't affect the proximity sensor. I think this is a bad/cheap flex cable that I bought.

Did the replacement screen come pre-assembled with the front camera and sensor flex? If it did, did you keep the original screen and or flex?

Excessive heat is a typical symptom of a partial (or complete) short. Because you say the camera & earpiece work, it may be either a partial short or an issue with the Ambient Light Sensor or Proximity Sensor, which are also on the flex.

Did you test those sensors?

  • For the ALS, go to settings/Display & Brightness, set the brightness to max or min and then toggle the Auto-Brightness switch to see if it adjusts automatically.
  • For the Proximity Sensor, go to the Voice Memos App and start a recording. While you are talking, cover the front camera / ear speaker area with your finger and the display should turn off and come back on when you remove your finger.

If you find that one of those sensors is defective, get a new flex, or better yet, put back your original flex if you still have it.
