@mohead it always helps if you let people know which device you are inquiring about. In your case you should let us know what model your tablet is.

Since you do not have access to your password, you can only do a complete reset. With that, you will lose your files!

  • With your tablet off, press and hold the volume up (+) button and power button until you see the RCA splash screen. Release both buttons to reveal the Android bot on his back with a caution symbol above him.
  • A new screen will appear asking you to use your volume up/down keys to move and the power button to select.
  • Use the volume down (-) button to highlight "wipe data/factory reset." Once highlighted, select using the power button.
  • A new screen will appear asking you to confirm your selection. Use your volume down (-) button to highlight "Yes -- delete all user data." Press the power button to select once highlighted.
  • Once the tablet is finished wiping data, you may press the power button to select "reboot system now." This will restart your tablet.
  • The system will begin to reboot and once again display the RCA logo. The next "Welcome" screen will prompt you to select your language of choice. Scroll through the options using your finger and press start when finished.

I don’t know why these people even try to answer your questions when they clearly aren’t educated on the subject and competent enough to actually provide a real and correct solution. I would avoid this website entirely if this is the quality of support you are getting because all these suggestions did was waste my time because they are incompetent fools.

All of these other people are assuming you are using an android tablet. If you are using any android device whether it be a phone or a tablet, the method and procedure on how to reset that device is all the same. Usually it consists of holding the power button and the volume + button but check for your device specifically to be sure.

If you have a Windows OS tablet or phone, then your procedure is going to be entirely different. My device had windows and the method I had to do was hold the function and f9 key but my keyboard didn’t have function keys so I had to do the alternative windows method which was starting the computer up to the log in screen and just simply holding the shift key while clicking on restart computer on the power options in the corner of the log in screen.

@tmcraig "I would avoid this website entirely if this is the quality of support you are getting" I do agree with you on that and think it is a great idea. You should follow your advice since you believe that the volunteers, that spend hours trying to help others on here, are "incompetent fools".

Taylor Craig knew just what he was talking about. I finally got to the settings menu bypassing the password on a windows based tablet by simply holding down SHIFT and RESTARTING. I wish I would have found this thread a lot sooner!

Settings are always there. They are part of the system. If you did the type of reset that is to try and keep your personal stuff on the device, that can cause issues. Especially if the problem that caused the need for a reset was something fishy on the device. Say a virus or malware.

Also, if the tablet had been rooted, a typical reset (neither factory or hard reset) would work correctly. The device would have to be unrooted first.

First try turning it off and back on. This may resolve your issue. If it does not, try a "Hard Reset" (instructions below). And should that not resolve it, then you are probably going to need to take it to a tech.

NOTE: Doing this will clear 'all' the data on your tablet, so it is suggested you not choose this option unless you have to, or aren't worried about losing anything on the device.

Be sure you back up any data you want to keep, to a computer or cloud account, before doing the reset.

To "Hard Reset" the tablet...

1. Make sure that the tablet is actually powered off.

2. Remove your SD card, if there is one in the device.

3. Press the "Power" and the "Volume Up" buttons, together, until you see the start-up logo on the screen.

4. Once you can see the logo, release the buttons and allow the device to enter the "System Recovery Mode".

5. Next use "Volume Down" button to get to the "wipe data/factory reset" option When in recovery mode the "Volume Up" and "Volume Down" buttons are how to can navigate and highlight what option you need.

6. Once you have selected the "wipe data/factory reset", press the "Power" button to select that option.

7. On the following screen, repeatedly press the "Volume Down" button until the "Yes - delete all user data" option is what is selected.

8. Then press the "Power" button to hard reset the tablet.

9. If you took your SD card out in step 2, when the device is up and running again, reinsert the SD card.
