Roger, you'll need the cable kit for installing the SSD too ;-)

Thanks MacHale, and you are correct, I didn't. Have used Macs for years and was very disappointed that this 27" i7 3.4 top if the range machine let me down. Would like to bring it back to life so SSD it is...

Hi Mayer, many thanks for your answer. I purchased the OWC Digital Thermal Sensor for iMac 2011 Hard Drive Upgrade and replaced the original Apple HD with a new Seagate (and also installed a secondary Samsung SSD to boot from). I followed the OWC instructional video exactly and placed the sensor on the new drive. However, the cooling fan is running constantly now so I assume the sensor doesn't work. Are there any software fixes I've missed? Thanks, Roger

Try disconnecting the secondary SSD and see if it stops. You didn't mention that secondary before.

You can if you want your iMac to sound like its about to take flight.

Without the cable, the iMac fan runs at full speed all the time and there isnt a way to stop it. If your going through the trouble to open the computer to do this upgrade, you should just do it right.

Thanks Cameron, I suspected as much. I may just go for the 2nd SSD installation to get the best out of the i7 processor - would you agree?

Yea. Thats a good option. Then boot from ssd and have files on HDD.
