There are several different reasons it could happen. I work on cell phones and it seems like the top 3 reasons are 1. Bad Sim card (Try a new one) 2. Phone was dropped or had a slight bend from being in pocket and baseband IC chip needs removed, reballed and micro soldered back in and 3. sim card slot is bad or needs resoldered.
