Front-load Drum is 1/2 full of water and water on the floor!

I went to load my front loading machine this morning. I opened the door and started to put a few items in, when I realized the washer was nearly 1/2 full of water.

(I have NO idea why the drum was partially filled and the door was Not locked. I just opened it, as usual, and didn't even notice the water right away.. I'm obviously sleep deprived!)

I (quickly) closed the door and ran the drain/spin cycle to drain the water.

While I was waiting for the cycle to finish, I "inspected" the area around the washer. The drain hose seemed to be intact and was not leaking (that I could tell).

It seems as though some water is seeping from the rear left side of the washer. It's not pouring out... put because it had sat there (for who knows how long?!)... There was a decent size puddle. *Should I first Check the drain pump housing? *

Possible helpful insight: The last load of laundry I did was Saturday (pretty much a week)...The laundry room is in what we consider the basement.. it is a bit more than 1/2 way below ground (A tri-level with a "basement").. Also (other than yesterday) we have gotten strong afternoon storms, and fairly abundant rains- for about 4 or 5 days straight. I doubt that has anything to do with anything, but wanted to be as detailed as possible ;-)

Cause 1

Drain Pump

Sometimes, small objects or articles of clothing can get caught in the drain pump. To determine if anything is blocking the drain pump, remove the drain pump and check the pump for obstructions. If the drain pump is clear of obstructions, but is still noisy during the drain cycle, replace the drain pump.

Cause 2

Clogged Pump or Hose

Sometimes, socks and other small articles of clothing can get into the drain system and clog the pump hose or the pump itself. Remove the hoses from the pump and check for any obstructions.

Cause 3

Lid Switch Assembly

The lid switch assembly prevents the washer from spinning when the lid is open. If the lid switch assembly fails, the washer will not drain. To determine if the lid switch assembly is defective, use a multimeter to test each of the lid switches for continuity. If a lid switch does not have continuity, replace it.

Melanie Bray-I would check the water inlet valve. Nothing else can put water in your tub except the inlet valve. It's common of a valve not completely closing and dripping into tub. A slow drip will produce a lot of water in a week. I'd suggest replacing the inlet valve. Dirt can pass screen n keep valve from sealing off causing washer to fill even if washer is unplugged. With washer in the basement, it could go unnoticed for days. Best to be safe. Turn the water off to the washer. Unplug washer. Remove hose at back of washer only. Remove the washer top. 2 screws in the back at top holding the top in place. Top will slide forward and up. The valve has 2 wires per coil take a pic to remember.Hand tighten hoses to new valve then tighten w/ Channel locks. K
