When I connect DVD--HD & DVD are not recognized

POWERBOOK G4

the superdrive died? and I switched it out with a DVD from a newer mac macbook, and then no ata devices recognized. the hard drive or the dvd were not found, and I got the ? in the mac box. when I pushed option key I got the blue screen with no bootable devices....weird....

PS MAYER is a great help on other ??? thanks.

Most likely an ID conflict. With ATA devices you have a Master and a Slave. Disconnect the DVD and boot up. Then go under "abut this Mac" more info, ATA and see if you can determine how your hard drive is set. Then change the jumper on the drive. There are three setting, master, slave and cable select. It doesn't matter which is master or slave as long as they're different. No cable select.
