How can I fix the ERROR 00 message?

Camera was working fine but now I have an error 00 message when the camera is turned on. It makes sound like the lens is trying to focus but then cuts off. I've removed the lens, battery and memory card and attempted to turn it back on with the same result. Camera turns on with lens off.
