If this is a older drive it could be the optical lock sensor may be dirty or dead. Blow it out and see if that helps. Also look to see if your computer sees the disk is locked or unlocked.

Just in case it worked before and just stopped working. Make sure that it is recognized by your computer. Is it enabled in your BIOS? What OS are you using and what computer do you have. Make sure that the power cable and the data cable are connected to the back of your drive, assuming your have a desktop. In case of a laptop you may want to pull it out and look at the contact and make sure they are not bend and aligned properly. It is most like that you may require a new drive if everything else checks out okay. Good luck.

Easy low cost repair in a desktop--with a laptop who knows. +
On the floppy drive ribbon connector make sure both end s of the cable are plugged in nice and tight, even if they are a bit loose the drive may be recognized but basically is useless.

Desk top running XP 3 have checked BIOS and cable for being tight. Computer recognizes the drive and Windows says, LOL, it's working properly, NOT! It will not read, write, or format a floppy. My wife's computer now does the same thing out of the blue it will do the same as mine. Hard to believe they both went bad within a month of each other. I wish I had an old one sitting around to swap drives to ck.

I think the easiest to do would be to replace them. For the desktop the cost is relative inexpensive and its a straight forward job. Good Luck
