iPhone gives 1002 error syncing, possible cause the dock connector?

My sister-in-law handed me her iPhone stating that she spilt bottled water on the bottom, the phone charges fine, will only go into recovery mode.

iTunes updates the phone, but about 1px away from finalising the firmware update it times out after about 10 minutes giving a 1002 error.

Opening the phone just to reveal components does not show any evidence of water damage or corrosion, I don't know how much water she thinks actually got in there.

I'm suspecting (hoping) that replacing the dock connector might resolve the issue, could anyone suggest if this is a wise move or could the phone be completely lost?

At the end of the log file I see the following:

Sending EBL Loader...
    Sending EBL Loader Length...OK
    Sending EBL Loader Data...OK
    Sending EBL Loader Checksum...OK
Sending EBL Loader -- All OK
Sending EBL...
Timed out
Giving up

Answer this question I have this problem too

Is this a good question?

http://www.hackint0sh.org/f127/4591.htm has a lot of info about this issue I have not come across anything that suggested to replace the dock connector. Here is what apple says http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1275 What I did found was something like this "1. Download Quickpwn 2.2

2. Open Itunes, try to restore

3. Get the 1002 error

4. Open Quickpwn

5. A popup should come up saying that you need to restart your Iphone/Ipod

6. Follow the instructions

7. When you see the Apple boot logo close Quickpwn

8. Your Iphone/Ipod should boot up normally and itunes will recognise it as a new iphone/ipod"

Quickpwn is at http://www.quickpwn.com/ and I am of course not suggesting to unlock or JB your phone. But give it a try before replacing any parts.

http://www.sinfuliphone.com/showthread.p... some more suggestions. Good Luck to you and your phone

just found this at http://forum.gsmhosting.com/vbb/f456/itu... Error 1002

Are you restoring to a stock apple firmware or a custom pwn firmware? Either way make sure you are in DFU mode first. http://osxdaily.com/2010/06/24/iphone-df... and http://limitededitioniphone.com/how-to-p...

Ah such a bugger, still can't seem to get it to update, I ended up trying PwnageTool 4.1.2.

I tell you it gets darn hopeful when you see it get to 1px left before completing and then it sits there for 10 minutes, lol.

Hi Brett,

That's the terrible thing about water damage; it could be in a pool for ten days and work fine after or 1 drop could end it.

If you ever get the iPhone to turn back on, and it just goes through a reboot cycle or connect to itunes, it's pretty much a lost cause. (UNLESS THE ABOVE WORKS...) We have tried so many times to fix a water damaged iPhone with these symptoms, and the only thing that works is replacing the logic board ($300 and up).

Please don't shoot the messenger.. we are only here to help!

Best,

Charlie

Thanks Charlie, I think I might have to tell her it's not going to work anymore, maybe I will now know what to buy her for her birthday this year now, lol.

Thanks both of you guys for your help, I did read some forums suggesting the quickpwn thingy but it seemed to crash and not do anything, though when unplugging the phone it said something along the lines of "great, you're iPhone has been jailbroken", but restarting kept putting it in that pesky recovery mode.

I'll give it another try again tonight, but if it doesn't work I'll just assume the bugger is dead, a shame really, it's pretty new.

Brett, it's not dead its just hibernating, don't give up on it yet I bet someone one here is going to find the solution :)....

I won't give up (entirely), lol as I was saying to my missus earlier "you know, I'll still be fighting with this bugger in 6 months when it's her birthday and I'll just buy her a new one or something and still continue to fight with it" lol
