My display occasionally inverts colours with a gray vertical bar.

On occasion, my display will invert colours, and show a vertical gray bar; I'm usually able to resolve this by manually adjusting the display's angle until the issue stops.

My current assumption is that the display cable needs a replacement.

This issue began intermittently around 2 months ago, and has increased in frequency since then.

Am I right in saying it is indeed the display cable causing this issue, or the LCD itself?

It's the LCD itself; the 2 ribbons going from the LCD panel to the LCD PCB are bad. The only way to resolve this is to replace either the LCD panel or the whole top lid assembly (easier).

Cheers, looks like I'll probably go for the easier option of the whole assembly.
