well... as the title says.. i replaced the lightning port, couldnt quite get the speaker in and said to heck with it and left it out.. no charging and itunes isnt picking up the phone.. is the speaker needed for the phone to work or is the lightning port faulty and needs to be sent back? thanks in advance.

The loudspeaker, ringer is not required for the charging port to function properly.
Sounds like a defective part, have you made sure that the replacement lightning connector assembly is placed in properly and the lightning charging port especially pushed together against the port hole aligned?
There shouldn't be any issue re-installing the loudspeaker as there is a small notch at the top of it which you tuck in first then you can install the rest. Make sure you don't have any screws loose around that part though.
