oslate what is your definition of overheating? What model is your mower? what have you checked? With a meter, have you checked the voltage going to your battery? Sounds like it is being overcharged.

oslate, Battery could be shorting internally and may need replaced. Some of the auto parts suppliers offer free battery testing like Pepboys, Nappa, Advanced auto parts,etc and can diagnose whether battery is faulty.

You do not state your model#, engine type(mfg.)or whether the battery over heats when engine is running or if overheating all the time even when engine not running. If battery overheating when engine off, 1st make sure battery is connected correctly positive cable on positive battery terminal and Negative to negative, check for short, damaged /melted cables/wire/plugs(look for any bare wire rubbing on metal frame/body). If battery overheating when engine running, the problem will be in the mowers charging system probably(perhaps use a DVOM to see if system is overcharging), faulty regulator/rectifier.
