RAM for the new iMac 27'' introduced at WWDC 2017

Hello.

I was wondering whether any RAM that has these specs will fit the new 27'' 5K iMac?

  • DDR4-2400MHz
  • SO-DIMM
  • 260pin

Or is there anything else I need to pay attention to (like, whether it's single- or double-ranked, etc)?

In particular, I'd like to know if this RAM upgrade kit works for the new iMac:

Thank you and kind regards,

- Matt

I bet you its all soldered on so you can't upgrade it.

actually, it's explicitly allowed; says "user accessible" on the tech specs page for the 27'' model: https://www.apple.com/imac/specs/

You'll need to wait a bit more until the dust settles. OWC or any other supplier will need to take a peak on what Apple used in a real system (buying a system) to then get the specs directly off the modules so they can then locate similar modules.

I would wait a week or so.

The thing is, OWC and Crucial already sell 2017 iMac memory.

But the one I'm linking to is a little cheaper, that's why I'm asking if it's compatible.

Well, I've heard from Crucial now that they fit the specs, but they won't give a 100% guarantee that they work, because they're double-ranked, and Crucial's Mac-dedicated RAM is single-ranked.

But seeing as OWC sells double-ranked RAM for these new iMacs, I think I'm on the safe side to buy these.

UPDATE: After having bought and installed the RAM linked above - it works beautifully in the new iMac 5k 27'' (2017) machines.

Did you use Crucial or OWC?

I used Crucial, the RAM module I linked in the original question. Works like a charm!

OWC has confirmed with their testing ram is a easy upgrade to 64Gb on all 27inch models, to a max of 16gb per ram module

Yes, that's why I'm asking if those specs, and in particular that model of RAM, is compatible with the new iMac.

So, Matthias, at the end did you buy and test the Crucial RAM?

I want to make the same upgrade and I was wondering if to go for the same Crucial CT16G4SFD824A (just different capacity than yours).

by

Marco, I bought that RAM, yes. I'm receiving my iMac today and the RAM tomorrow, so I'll know then if it's really compatible or not - but I don't have any doubts it does. I'll keep you posted.

by

Thanks a lot, Matthias. I will receive my iMac on Monday and wait for your feedback in these days to order the Crucial CT16G4SFD824A.

Marco, the RAM I linked to above works beautifully. Running on 40 GB now :)
