How come it only reads games?

I've had this console since 2011 but now it can only read games and not dvd's like it use to...and no, it never played Blu-ray's at all. Unfortunately, the warranty on this one expired 4 years ago and it's too expensive for me to take it to some repair shop. Is there a way to fix it myself or just admit defeat?

hermitburtonjewel that sounds like a laser lens error. Your optical drive has more than one laser to read the different disk CD/DVD/BR. It could just be a dirty lens or a failed laser. You could try one of the commercially available lens cleaners or consider disassembling your device and cleaning/replacing the laser assembly. Start with this guide. Defeat? Never!
