iPhone 5s will not turn on

I was given an iPhone 5s that will not turn on. It looks pretty rough with chunks of the screen missing. Any ideas how to troubleshoot this? Do I need to order a screen and replace it before I will know if it's the logic board or what?

All help is much appreciated!

you could try plugging it into your computer and see if anything fires up or shows up in iTunes.

That's exactly what I was thinking, but how do I know it's even "on" in the first place? Any sure fire way to turn it off and back on without the screen working?

You'll know if iTunes detects it. It may take a while, if the battery is drained. I'd charge it first then connect it to a PC.

No need to try and do a hard reset or anything to make sure that it's powered on? It'll just do so itself?

Okay, so charged for 15 mins and then plugged up to PC after holding power button and nothing detected in device manager or iTunes. Is it for sure the logic board? Anything else to try first before I order a logic?

After another 15 mins of charging, plugged the phone up to PC and wala - magical "ding" noise of recognization. Looks like a new screen it is! THANKS!
