32GB SDHC card; tablet sees it, but setting won't show available space

I have a Galaxy Note 10.1 2012 tablet with Android Version 4.1.2. It keeps running out of storage space, so I decided to mount a 32GB SDHC microSD card in the slot. I installed the card correctly, and the tablet sees the card, but after I mounted it, no available storage space info is showing in the Settings, Storage area under SD Card. It offers an icon on the home page, when I click to format the SD card, it acts like it does it, but the sd card icon returns to the black frame in the corner, and when I return to Settings, Storage, SD Card, all it offers for choices is Mount SD card. I suspect a faulty SD card slot, but wanted to get your opinion before I spend any money on a possible fix.

I have a newer tablet that I purchased last year, and it works A-OK, but would like to keep the older 2012 tablet working as I've gifted it to my 80-yr-old aunt to play slots!

Any suggestions?

Chosen Solution

Put the card in a PC or Mac.

Right-Click the Card when it shows up.

On a Mac, select Get Info

On a PC, select Propreties

Check that the card is formatted as "FAT32", not "XFAT" or "NTFS".

If it is not, you will need to backup the data and format as FAT32.

I cannot check the SD card. It is installed in a tablet in Delaware, and I'm in Albuquerque! However, I can tell you that it was a brand-new 32GB SanDisk microSDHC. Is there a way to check the properties of a microSD card on a tablet?! This is a great possible fix, and I surely appreciate your suggestion.

If there is nothing important on the SD card, you can always try reformatting it directly to see if the issue is resolved. Android 4 will directly try to format as FAT32.

Checked another brand new one (just like the one that doesn't work correctly in the tablet), and it's formatted FAT32.

From this page, it looks like you should try to update the tablet to 4.4.2

http://www.gsmarena.com/samsung_galaxy_n...

Settings --> About Tablet --> Software Update should be where it is.

Thanks for the suggestion. Need to find where I can download the update. Don't see any download options at android.com. Need to spend some time researching where I can find the downloadable update.

I tried "software update," but since 4.1.2 isn't any longer supported, the tablet settings page tells me that the latest updates are already installed on the tablet. Maybe it's time for a new tablet!
