Have you tried pressing the 'up' arrow button (in the middle of the phone) during a call to increase the volume of the caller?
Can you hear the caller at all when you press the 'speaker' button on the phone?
Really odd question, but is the call during which you cannot hear always from the same person using their phone at all? If so it may be that their phone is faulty and not yours. Just a thought.
