Isn't there some trick about putting them in a glass of water...if they float they aren't good. Or is that an old wives tale?

No thats true

Just fill a bowl with cold water and place your eggs in the bowl. If they sink to the bottom and lay flat on their sides, they're very fresh. If they're a few weeks old but still good to eat, they'll stand on one end at the bottom of the bowl. If they float to the surface, they're no longer fresh enough to eat.

Nobody does the research except me ;-)

That's why they pay you the big bucks!

by

Yep. Totally true

by

In addition to what Cameron says if you crack it open and the egg has gone bad it will smell, well, like rotten egg. So, to avoid going thru this if the egg floats toss it in a sealed baggy and take it to the dumpster.

@mayer , Balut, Not for me :-{(> might get caught in the mustache, I will stick to onion rings. Maybe @refectio , @cam2363 , @gigabit87898 , @pccheese would care for some Balut, check out Mayer's link above. You could maybe see if that is on the Ifxit social picnic menue!

Put eggs in bowl of water, fresh eggs sink and old eggs float. If you have the carton, check the "Best use by" date. Last, it depends on how the eggs were stored, best to leave eggs in carton and in middle part of refrigerator instead of the door. Uncooked eggs should last 3 to 4 weeks after expiry of Best use by date if properly refridgerated.

Ok, I checked and they expired two days ago. Think I'll pass.

by

That is a "Best by" date and not a terminal date. Two days after Best by date is still good.

by

I don't like the sound of "terminal date" at my age.

Just cook them. If you get ill, they were bad. If you dont get ill, they were fine.

@refectio, I have a question for you. In your "about" page, you say you've got a technical degree in micro electronics. What I want to know is, did something like that require a lot of math? I'm interested in learning something like that, but I hate math. Always will hate math. I could probably handle some light math, but not E=MC2 stuff that takes up an entire black boards. Did you like this course, and did it require a lot of time to study?

Things have changed a lot from when I did my program. I did 2 calculus classes (in 3 years) back then but in the real world, I never had to use this type of math in the course of my work. Now if you wanted to be an engineer...you would certainly need to study and use a lot of math. Repair and design are two different worlds. Never let a few classes that scare you detract you from what you want to achieve in life. You just have to work harder to get through the classes you enjoy less.

Take a look to see what the curriculum looks like today. This is a three year college level degree (not university).

BTW, e=mc2 is not much different than V=IR (Ohm's Law) or 6=3 x 2 for that matter. Don't get hung up on the math. This is hard math ;>) but you don't need to learn this to be a tech.

by

Thanks @refectio. Just what I wanted to know. My family's good at doing family business (we've actually got two) so I probably won't go to college, no need. I can always self learn. I might open my own repair shop sometime...

by

You can start a small business now with a eBay account, buy broken phones, fix them, then sell for a profit. I'm about to spend 75% of my birthday money on this so that's about $335

by

@gigabit87898, I have many more ways of making money. Might even go into business with my freind making campaign stools. Should pay close to $40 an hour for work that can be done whenever I want. Good idea for you, though.

If I where opening a repair, business, I'd have to go full time. Website. Store. Ifixit business tech toolkit+master tech certificate. And maybe if I'm good I could get an official ifixit certified business. The first of it's kind.

Remember,

1. Fix the world

2. Fix the phones

3. Dalla Dalla Bills

One thing I have noticed on this question, the quality of the advise is proportional to the age of the respondent.

by

Isn't that almost always true?

by

What that means is that you youngsters are not picking up on what the old guys are doing. This is supposed to be a learning process. Else wise we are just peeing into the wind.

Put them in a bowl of water. A fresh egg has a bubble of air in it. One end will float. As the egg ages, it will develop microfissures in the shell, allowing the air to escape. As this happens, the air dissipates and the egg will no longer float.
