Mic is working but callers can't hear after replacing dock connector

After replacing the dock connector and headphone jack, the mic works but callers CANNOT hear me. I can hear them clearly. If I use a headset or speakerphone, the unit works properly and callers CAN hear me. IFixit's instructions did not address the part attached to the headphone jack ( i think it's the grounding cable). Is it possible this is where my problem lies?

The mic responsible for transmitting your voice to your callers is located in the dock.

- Either you did not transfer the rubber gasket (look at the old dock, you'll see it: a small bronze/copper square component inserted into a black rubber gasket - the size of a match stick tip);

- Or your damaged that mic during installation;

- Or it was bad or missing (broken off) to begin with.

I would look closely at the new dock and if the mic is properly installed, try a new one or the old one back just to test the mic and make sure this is indeed the cause.

If the new dock is back, buy a good quality one this time. Cheap ones have headphones jack issues and/or mic issues and/or cellular signal reception issues. I'd get one from iFixit themselves and if by chance it happens to be bad, their warranty is the best in the industry.

I inserted the gasket properly and the parts were purchased from ifixit. As previously stated, the mic works in speaker function. I believe the mic is functioning. If the mike works in speaker then I must assume the mic is OK. I am working under the assumption the problem lies in the reassembly of the unit. The instructions from ifixit were unclear regarding the four metal washers under the lightning dock and did not exist regarding the grounding cable.

No! The mic you use for talking in speaker mode is different. It is located in the screen, on the same cable as the front cam and ear speaker.

So either you received a bad part or it was damaged during install. I recommend talking to iFixit about it and getting a replacement to try it out.

As for the grounding, although important, it will not prevent the mic from working.

Thank you for your reply.

So then, is the mic used when i dictate a message the same mic used when on speaker?

by

Different apps use different mics.

Siri and dictation use the same mic as when on speaker = the one in the screen. This is actually how I test it: either by talking to Siri or by recording a selfie/Facetime video.

WhatsApp for example uses the bottom/dock mic to record messages.

When using WhatsApp, the mic is functioning properly. It records my dictation into the message window. Is this an indication that the mic I installed with the ifixit parts is not the issue?
