Best way to Improve Performance?

iMac Intel 20'' EMC 2133

2GHz CPU

4GB memory but usually only has less than 1gb free

250GB HDD

which of the three component should I upgrade to get the best direct improvement on my imac. Should I upgrade:

2.4GHz CPU

6GB memory

larger HDD or SSD?

I don't need my iMac to run intensive software or gaming, just normal home and office use. I have noticed a very slow startup time which takes about 1 minute. Also, it is a bit laggy when running multiple softwares

Thanks

I would hold off on the CPU as that's normally not the issue.

I would get the ram and an SSD as those (especially the SSD) can make a MASSIVE difference in how the computer runs.

Not sure if you use the Disk drive, but if you don't, get Installing iMac Intel 20" EMC 2133 and 2210 Dual Hard Drive the second drive and make that your boot disk as there are sensors on the HDD and without them, the fans go crazy.

That's the guide to replace the ram. Do the ram first as its cheap, easy and can make a difference, if its not fast enough, do the SSD.
