Touch ID works but home button doesn't

My iPhone got water damage and it stopped working then once I got it working again my Touch ID worked but my home button did not, switched backplate and flex cable and also the home button itself and it still did not work I assume the issue is with the motherboard but i don't know where to start. Any suggestions?

I'd double check and clean the connectors on the original home button. Only the original will give you Touch ID function. So try a new home button extension flex with the (cleaned) original home button. If that doesn't work, it's either board level or the the home button itself is damaged.

I would add that may be some of the filters near the home button FPC on the top of the board or the FPC connector on the home button flex itself is corroded and a bit of flux and soldering can fix those and get Touch ID back to work again. But must be tackled by someone with micro-soldering tools and skills. Definitely not DYI.
