iPhone 5 charging port issue

My iPhone 5 battery got really hot, the phone stopped charging, and drained ridiculously fast and now will not charge or even tell me the battery is low. I got a new battery thinking that was the problem but it wasn't so this made me think it has something to do with the charging port. Next I bought and replaced the charging port and today the phone still doesn't charge at all. One thing that stood out to me was that the headphone jack and charging port are connected on the same strip. I put in a good battery to power and the phone and the new headphone jack works so I know the replacement part functions. The thing is the phone still does not charge even with a new charging port. My question is, is the issue with the board or something else in the phone and has anyone experienced something like this with their iPhone? Thanks for any replies.

Answer this question I have this problem too

You could have a logic board problem or it could be something wrong on a modular level. You have too many variables right now so you will need to eliminate some very quickly.

I would bring your phone down to its simplest expression, mainly the logic board, the battery and the charge port. Connect it to an iTunes enabled computer, make sure iTunes recognizes it and check to see if it overheats. If it still overheats, then you most likely have a problem on the logic board (charging circuit I suspect). You can download 3uTools and it will tell you if the battery is charging and at what level it is.

If the phone appears to work well without overheating and charging properly, add modules one by one.

Hi,

I have a repair shop in a small town and recently ran into this problem on an iPhone 6 Plus. I took the same troubleshooting path you did. I replaced the battery first thinking the issue might be battery related and cheaper for my customer. When that didn't work I replaced the charging port. I still had the same issues with the device.

After opening it up and inspecting it a 3rd time I tried another new battery thinking the first battery may have been bad. After replacing the battery a second time and with the new charging port in the device everything worked fine.

I've been working on Apple products for 6 years and this was the first time I'd ever seen this issue. The only conclusion I could come to is that the bad charging port (being the issue the whole time) may have shorted the connection in the first new battery (which I put in before replacing the charging port).

Basically, my guess would be that you may have experienced the same thing and might try another new battery now that you have fixed the charging port. Hope this was helpful. Good Luck.
