First try a SMC reset.

If no liquid spilled on the macbook this is often an inverter cable issue more than a inverter board problem. Using the Ifixit manual remove the macbook top case and check the inverter cable connection to the logic board (upper left just under the speaker, black cable). It could only be a disconnected cable. If not then you'll probably need to swap the cable with a working one or test the inverter board and the backlight lamp. On rare occasions the logic board can also be the culprit but since the inverter cable goes thru the macbook hinge it can be damaged by friction applied on the cable after many years of opening and closing the display. That's why the inverter cable is the first part that needs to be verified when the screen lightning is failing.

Sounds like your inverter has gone south. Please give us the last three letters of your serial number so we can direct you to the correct part and installation guide. To confirm this, hook it up to an external monitor. All should be well on the external.
