iMac 27" late 2009 i5 - Potential Logic Board failure

I am new to the forum and to Apple Macs in general so please be gentle!

I recently bought a second hand late 2009 iMac 27" i5. I really wanted the display port target display mode option as my wife works from home on Fridays and wanted to take advantage of the nice big screen using her windows laptop.

Anyway, being the tinkered that i am i took the screen off to fit an SSD and noticed a bunch of screws missing as well as the LCD cable being really loose o nthe logic board. I replaced the LCD cable and the Sync cable as both were frayed and in need of a refresh, i also bought a screws pack and fitted the missing screws. Upon putting back together the screen is black but i can hear that the iMac is booting up perfectly.

Trip to Apple it was...they hooked it up to their diagnostics and it appears to be the logic board according to them and they cannot fix it as it is too old! which leads to my question:

Can i fit any late 2009 logic board? for example the cheap late 2009 i7 one i see on eBay . bearing in mind my one was an i5 from the shop?

Chosen Solution

Sadly, your choices are limited to one of these: iMac11,1

  • 2.8 GHz Quad-Core i7 - Apple P/N 661-5428
  • 2.66 GHz Quad-Core i5 - Apple P/N 661-5429

Even still, not sure getting it going here will offer what you want as your wife's MS Windows system won't be able to connect to the iMac's OS-X OS services. Here's the requirements: Use your iMac as a display with Target Display Mode.

Thank you for your help. I think I am in luck with the logic board on ebay, now the dreaded switch out!

Target display worked well with my Surface pro 4, not tried it with my wife's laptop though.

One other Q, will the i7 logic board work with the i5 Processor from my old logic board?

Technically, the logic board is the same. So if you get one that is not populated you could install a known good CPU. Most sellers only offer full boards,

I would be hesitant to get a plain board as it would be hard to prove if the CPU was good or you got a bad board. Don't be penny wise, pound foolish here.
