Why won't my phone ring for a text message?

My phone doesn't ring for a text message when the phone is locked it just lights up. It will ring if I'm using my phone and someone texts me, I've put everything back to the way it was when I bought the phone and turned the volumes up as loud as they can go but it still does the same thing
