Why doesn't my PowerBook G4 15" boot up?
After the grey screen with Apple logo and spinning wheel I get a blank blue screen. Why doesn't it boot up?
Is this a good question?

It's not finding a complete system. First start up from your system installation disk by holding down the "C" key. Go to the second page pull down menu, Utilities -> Disk Utility and see if you can repair the drive. If no drive shows up then replace it.

UPDATE
Connect them via a firewire cable. Start the machine that needs repair holding down the "T" key. Start the other machine up. The "target machine icon should show up on your desktop. Go to your applications folder -> Utilities -> Disk Utility and see if you can repair the drive.
I do have another machine, it's a MacBook Pro 17", what are the steps to hook them up and boot?

Mayer thanks for your reply. Unfortunately I don't have the system installation disk. Just noticed something, if I hold the 'option' during startup I get to a screen with 2 arrows and an icon of my HD, however the HD icon has an 'X' on it and therefore I can't select it. Any suggestions?

If the machine has been running with this drive then it has gone bad. Time to replace it.

No way to salvage the drive?

Without a way to boot the machine and run Disk Utilities, there's no way to tell. If you have another Mac, you can hook them up via firewire and boot the machine holding down the "T" key and repair it from the other machine.
