Microphone and fingerprint sensor sometimes work

Hello,

What would cause the microphone and fingerprint sensor to work sometimes? Is it a motherboard issue or will possibly replacing the lightning port fix this?

Thanks!

The Lightning port doesn't have anything to do with the Touch ID sensor. If it is not recognizing your finger prints, then it may be damaged. This functionality cannot be replaced.

As for the microphone, there are three microphones in an iPhone:

  • The bottom microphone is for Voice Memo and phone calls. The other microphones serve as error cancellation
  • The (top) front microphone is used for FaceTime calls, Siri and selfie videos with the front camera (FCAM). The top back microphone serves as error cancellation
  • The (top) back microphone is used for videos with the rear camera (RCAM). The top front microphone serves as error cancellation

You will need to troubleshoot your phone a bit more to understand what doesn't work and under what conditions.

Hello, turned out fingerprint ID issue was due to cable not being seated correctly. Have discovered that if the screen is snapped closed mic does not work. However, when screen is open mic works fine.

Possibly a front camera microphone alignment issue for the black rubber gasket hole for earpiece.

I put a piece of electrical tape over the rectangular area above the charge port, shut the case and mic works. Does anyone know why this solved my problem?

Possibly a badly mounted bottom microphone?

by

Thanks Ben, If it was a badly mounted bottom microphone it would have had to have come that way from the factory; this phone has not been repaired. Looking at some of my parts phones, there seems to be some factory installed tape there, black, or white or sometimes both overlaid. The phone with issues only had a small piece of white tape, I cut a slightly larger piece of electrical tape and overlaid it. All features of the lightning port appear to work, no more issues.
