Black Screen/Cross: Problem with the logic board or the hdd?
Hi everyone, i opened my ipod to change clickwheel and the headphone jack flex.
I have to add that I was a bit rude to her while opening.
After i changed the stuff, i realized that when i plug the battery, she doesn't open. (Normally she was opening automatically just after plugging the cable.) So I tried to connect her to the PC with USB but there's just a blank black screen and no response from the PC.
After some challenges with the board like un/plugging everything, i got half lighted screen with just a red cross. And recently I got full lighted boot up screen and after a cross with no hdd plugged. But when I plugged the hdd, it didnt boot again. I dont know where is the problem, the board or hdd or its connector. Any ideas for what to do?
Is this a good question?

Thanks to the first reply! According to this message, i want to add a few information. I tried the first solution but this ipod isn't giving any response to any keystrokes. Just lights up when computer connection provided. So I have connected to PC and disconnected just for getting screen up. This time it showed up with a black screen. I tried the first solution after that but the both play/pause+menu and center+menu keystrokes just turned it off. I assume these keystrokes are for rebooting it, but it couldn't boot after turning off. About the other solution, I don't get any weird sound or clicking from hdd. I know these harddisks are locked for computer usage. But for other branded MP3 players? I have a Creative Zen Vision M, can I try this HDD with it, just for being sure?

I seem to have read about this just very recently and it was determined that Apple has a code in the firmware that disables them for anything but the iPods. Now it does stand to reason to give it a try in a different player, may be it wont have any issues in those. Also, T believe having read that they do work in external USB enclosure for example as long as they are not the master boot drive. That is how I had previously formatted a couple of these drives.

Interfaces with Creative doesn't match, one is ATA-4, other is ATA-6. And I think there's no need to test the HDD. I think the problem is the logic board. Any way to be sure about it?

burakoz, if anything I would probably start with a HDD replacement. Have you tried the diagnostic mode to see what it comes up with? Here are a coupke of screen shots http://www.flickr.com/photos/ipodlounger... and here is the how to, just in case http://www.methodshop.com/gadgets/ipodsu...
