This seems to be a developing issue, BIG mess-up on Apple's part on consistency here. You can check this previous thread for more on what type of screws. However, if you, unlike the previous poster, can post some good pics of the screws, then we can direct you to the right driver and positively ID the type of screw finally. It seems the US models use phillips, although the promo pictures had torx, and international models have some sort of hex. Not sure exactly though, MAJOR consistency failure by Ive & co.

@rab777hp and OP - on the thread you reference Miroslav Djuric has pics posted of the new screw type Apple are using.

I live in Colorado and have personally seen this new screw on my friends new iPhone 4 and my wife's new iPhone 4. That same thread has links to Ebay to purchase the tool to open the newer iPhone 4's with this new type of screw.

looks like tamper-resistant torx in the 5 lobed variety. These are and have been commonly used on many of the European cars in various applications such as motor, brakes, lights and interior trim. These should be about the right dimension and can give you an idea which size you might be looking for. The screws that Apple installed on the iPhone 4 is T1

Size Inch point to point [in] Metric point to point [mm]

T1 .031 .81

T2 .036 .93

T10 .107 2.74

T15 .128 3.27

T20 .151 3.86

Looks like very limited availability :) http://www.traderscity.com/board/product...

and http://www.8starshop.com/en/12-in-1-comp...

Good luck and do not forget to change the screws to something a little more manageable....
