Dishwasher lights on control panel do not come on,

My Maytag Quiet Series 300 works but the control panel, button lights, which are on top of the door, never lights up. Originally, the button lights worked fine for a few months when we bought it 6 years ago. Then the stopped coming on but the buttons worked just fine. Since the unit operated fine and the buttons worked fine, we left it alone. Recently the unit went dead. When I opened it up I saw the ribbon came out. Evidently they used tap to keep it in place. So I reconnected it and the unit now works fine again but no button lights.

Any thoughts on what is causing this? As long as it keeps cleaning the dishes, I can live with this but the wife complains once in a while. thanks

I can think of two possibilities:

1.) Inspect the ribbon cable that goes from the control panel (with the button and lights) to the main control board. Make sure there aren't any tears or corrosion on the pins.

My thought is that given the ribbon cable came loose, it was never properly installed with correct bracing, and either installation or chafing damaged the cable.

2.) There is a bad component on the control panel circuit board in the lighting circuit. You can inspect the circuit board for obvious damage (e.g. Blackened components) and replace as necessary.

I did not notice anything bad on the cable, pins or corrosion but I did not inspect the connection at the panel. As long as it works fine, I don't think I am going to spend the $ for a new board. But I am going to open it up again and do a more thorough inspection. I might notice something I missed. I never claimed to be a service technician but I usually get by. Thanks for the thoughts, very helpful and appreciated.
