ifixit says I need to get the same brand hard drive but not sold!

My iMac EMC 2308 has a Hitachi hard drive in it. When I searched it up here, the only brands that are sold are Seagate and WD. But it also says that I have to use the same brand that was in it.

"Important: To ensure compatibility with the 2009 and 2010 21.5" or 27" iMac, the replacement hard drive must be of the same brand as the original. The model number of the hard drive does not matter as long as the brand matches. 2011 and up iMacs cannot be supported by us."

So if I buy a WD and try to install it, will it not work? Also, what if I wanted to install a 2TB instead of a 1TB which is what was currently in the machine?

Here's how to replace the drive:

iMac Intel 21.5" EMC 2308 Hard Drive Replacement

The thermal sensors are the following Apple part number:

  • Hitachi 922-9215
  • Seagate 922-9216
  • Western Digital 922-9217

Get the Western Digital here: http://www.powerbookmedic.com/parts/922-...

An alternative, so you can use any drive is the OWC solution, OWC In-line Digital Thermal Sensor for iMac 2009-2010 Hard Drive Upgrade: https://eshop.macsales.com/item/OWC/DIDI...

Thank you, I've already removed the drive. So if I understand what you're saying, it seems like I can use a variety of 3.5" drives as long as I get the correct thermal sensor.

Yes, with the OWC route. The new drive will need to have the thermal sensor receptacle built in to use the original Apple cables.

If you go with a SSD you'll need the OWC in-line sensor as unlike the HD's they don't have external access to the built-in sensor if it has one.
