iPhone 5s will not turn on or charge

This iPhone was purchased and activated about 2 years ago and has had a screen replacement several months back. Two days ago, the device was left in a vehicle overnight. The device had been exposed to cold (<32 Fahrenheit) , but not moisture. After retrieving the phone, the battery had been depleted. While recharging the device, a series of colored lines flashed across the display before it went dark. After a few hours, there was still no change. I opened the phone to examine any possible damage, and saw none. After assuming it might have been battery failure, I replaced the battery with a brand new one. There is still no change. The battery warms slightly as if charging, but the screen is completely dark with no charging icon even after considerable charging time. Hopefully it is not Logic board damage. Any help would be appreciated.

I've seen this problem before, a quick and inconvenient fix is to charge a battery off of another iphone and put it in, the phone might work until the battery drains completely then it'll need externally charged again. However it's most likely a problem with the logic board, which will need replaced.

That is U2 Tristar Charging IC. If phone can't charge flat batteries.

Did you notice any condensation inside the device that could have formed from the cold-->warm transition?

The extreme cold would certainly affect the battery, at least short term. I regularly spend entire days outdoors, at very cold temperatures (-15 to -20C) and my phone is in my jacket pocket and not really insulated from the cold. The battery life sucks but the phone still works. The main difference in my situation is that the phone is on and the internal temperature is much warmer.

That said, these are the specs from Apple :

  • Operating ambient temperature: 0° to 35° C (32° to 95° F)
  • Nonoperating temperature: -20° to 45° C (-4° to 113° F)
  • Relative humidity: 5% to 95% noncondensing

My suspicion is that you plugged it in to charge while the device was still very cold. The screen or some of the components may have suffered from thermal shock. It may be only a bad LCD but you may have damaged the charge and/or backlight circuit.

It is probably a problem with the battery connector or logic board. It is also possible that a problem with the screen is present. You said it displayed lines before it went dark, so it is possible it is a LCD Issue. Hope this helps!

I'll check the screen first. Hopefully it's not logic board problems. Thanks!
