Hi,

Have you tried a different compatible charger?

Have you tried a different compatible USB cable to see if it charges when connected to a USB port on a PC?

Have you inspected the phone's USB port, using a strong light and a magnifying glass to check that all the pins are there, that they are all straight and parallel with each other and that it is not blocked by lint or dust and that is what is causing the problem?

If you have done all the above and the answer is yes and you still can't charge the phone then as you say there may be a problem with the USB port.

The short answer to your question is NO. It is not a repair for novices.

Because the connector is a SMD (Surface Mounted Device) type USB connector you will need the requisite tools and knowledge in SMD soldering techniques to un-solder the old connector (or re-solder it if it is just loose on the systemboard) and replace it with a new one without causing any or more damage to the phone.

I recommend that you contact 3 reputable, professional mobile phone repair services and ask for a quote for a repair. I suggest 3, that way if their quotes are all similar in price, you will have a better idea of the real cost of the repair. Also they will be responsible for any damage that occurs during the repair and if they are truly professional will give a warranty on their repair (ask them about it. It should be at least 30 days anyway).

If you wish to try it yourself anyway, here is a video which shows how to replace the screen in a Moto G4. It is handy as it shows what you have to do just to gain access to the systemboard (on which the USB charge port is mounted) so that it can be removed from the housing for the USB port repaired.

Here is a video which shows how to un-solder and then solder a USB connector. (not yours, this is only to show how it is done). It looks easier than it is as the video shows it being done on a bigger board with the other components further away. You do not want them coming off as well because you have applied too much heat.

You also have to be aware that there are a lot of USB connectors available. You have to find the correct type for your phone as the lug arrangement (lugs hold connector to board) as well as the pin connections can vary.

If you think that I'm trying to put you off you are right or if you still wish to do it, at least do some practice on an old non working phone etc first so that when you do yours there will be less potential problems and consequences.

Is there a recommended vendor to buy Moto G4 charging ports from? The vendors that my local independent repair business (GopherMods) buys from have been out of stock of this part since October of last year, but they said that, if I bring in my own part, it would only cost labor.

Hi @InSImpleTermsJordan,

The best option is to search online for "Moto G4 USB charging port" to get results for suppliers. Then select the one that suits you best.

Here's just one example from the search results.

It is only shown to give you an idea of the cost of the part.

Not every supplier supplies two connectors but a lot do for some reason.

Good luck
