You should be able to increase your memory to 640mb. There's 128mb built into the motherboard, and you can add a 512mb memory chip. Added memory gives your programs more breathing space and should speed everything up a bit. And it's an easy operation: iBook G3 12" RAM Replacement

The other thing to consider would be upgrading the hard drive. The stock drive is probably 4200 rpm; a 7200 rpm drive would be much faster. That's a much more difficult operation: iBook G3 12" Hard Drive Replacement

It's worth noting that while these upgrades will pep up the machine, it might never feel really snappy. I have an iBook G4 on which I maxed out the memory, and it still feels pretty draggy compared to newer computers. But it makes for a decent backup machine and is just fine for certain kinds of tasks.

What is the cost and how soon can I get it?

That's a question for whichever vendor you choose to go with. You could buy from iFixit -- clicking on the "Parts" link under the picture of the ibook to the right will take you to their store.

Another good place to buy memory is Macsales.com -- here's the page with the memory for the G3 iBooks: http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/memory/iB...
