Hello Mr Jackson,

I have just been watching “The Reassembler” put a Kenwood Chef 701A food mixer back together on a TV program which is the exact same model as the one I bought my late mom in 1965 for her birthday and followed this up with the accessories for birthday and Christmas presents – I bought all of them except for the coffee grinder. Many of these accessories are “still brand new, that is to say they have not been used.

Though I inherited the Kenwood after she died, I was fearful of wearing it out because there was no prospect of repairing it in the country I lived in at the time so it was hardly used between 1980 and 1998. When I moved to the UK I had it serviced and began using it again – the liquidiser to convert fresh fruit into juice but a noisy, rattling sound developed about six months later on the high speed side. Seeing this program has made me “obsessively determined” to solve this problem so I can use it again.

In my previous endeavors to solve this problem about five or six years ago, I contacted Kenwood here in the UK but sadly, because it is considered to be obsolete, I was not offered the help I requested – a factory refurbishment. Instead, it was suggested the local agent serviced it.

The rattling noise made me suspect it is a gear train fault leaning towards worn spindles and / or bushes but when watching the reassembly, I learned a toothed belt provides the drive between the motor and the low speed gearbox leaving the high speed accessories to be driven directly off the motor so my pre-strip down fault diagnosis tells me this is likely to be worn motor bushes / bearings. Please be aware I have not yet stripped down the food mixer until I know I am capable of carrying out the repair and can get the spares.

I came across the ifixit site during my search after the program to find somebody who can help me and your name was the only one to come up though not specifically for my problem.

Are you in a position to identity what the cause could be / confirm my suspicions and what I need to do to get it back to “as new condition” again please??

Your advice / guidance / help will be greatly appreciated.

Regards and have a nice day.

Colin Boyce.
