shows red on charger

My mac book comes on when plugged up but shows red on charger also it just shows the apple with the bar under it and does nothing else can someone help?thanks

It sounds like you have two issues here. The bigger one is the fact the OS is not fully loading (Apple logo and the bar). As you didn't tell us your exact model you could have a corrupted OS install, a bad drive or the drives SATA cable is bad or a combo of these.

As far as the menu bar icon. I wouldn't worry about this one until you get the system to boot up first. You may only need to do a SMC reset or the battery its self is bad. Normally I would recommend loading this app: CoconetBattery but until you get your system running it won't help you.
