Typically if you have a blown head gasket, your oil will have coolant present in it, and look like chocolate milk. A cylinder compression test will help you isolate which cylinders are effected. As for a crack, only a visual inspection with the head off, will tell you definitely whether you have a crack or not.

As for losing all the coolant, check for leaks at the water pump, hoses, and radiator, It should be pretty obvious once the engine reaches operating temperature. Hope this help . I've owned three Cavaliers myself.

Ronnie where did you see the leak? On the engine block, radiator, thermostat housing? You seen the bad leak by just feeling it without the engine running? Very seldom will you see a bad leak with a blown head gasket or even a cracked head. The crack usually happens on the inside of the casting between the cooling jackets and its often not that visible. If you have seen a bad leak it would help to see on which part of the engine did you see it....just my 2cents. Good luck and let us know.

You need to fill it and then locate the leak. It may just be a freeze plug.
