Onkyo receiver wont connect with LG smart TV using ARC

The user manual for the receiver here makes no mention at all of an ARC capable HDMI port, (or even ARC) so you would assume that it hasn't got one. Having HDMI doesn't mean that it is ARC capable. HDMI ARC was only introduced with HDMI V1.4. I cannot find out what version your receiver has installed. It just says HDMI. The earliest mention that I can find for ARC is 2012 and I think that your receiver was made before this as the copyright on the service manual is 2008.

Researching your question seems to indicate that if you want the TV audio to go to the receiver, that you might have to use the digital optical in connection on the receiver, (if your TV has audio digital optical out that is - you don't state the model number).
