Black Screen but powers on

well it all started when it would wake the screen would be black,i could get it back by changing the screen brightness .But now it starts up but its black i can turn the volume up and down caps button lights up.the brightness trick no longer works.I have tried hooking it up to a external monitor but nothing .Any help i would be thankful.Thanks Pete

Have you tried lifting the keyboard (pull the 2 tabs to the left of the F1 key and to the right of the F11 key) and pressing really hard on the picture (To the left of the memory cover grille). While you are still pressing hard that area, push the power button and wait for about 30 seconds. It worked on my once dead iBook G4 14". Hope this helps! :)

You say that the screen is black but can you still see a faint image of the desktop by lightning the display Apple logo with a flashlight ? If so your problem could be a faulty inverter cable (or the inverter board) but since there's no video on the external monitor It also could be a GPU issue (graphic module soldered to the logic board) and that means a logic board replacement or a GPU reflow.
