System hang, refuses to boot for a while & has pixelated error screen

Dear Ifixit,

I recently started using my brother's Mac book pro. He let me have it after it stopped booting randomly. For a while it worked perfectly, no issues with booting, resuming from sleep or battery/power related problems.

Today for the first time it started crashing again. I manged to get a shot of the error screen with my phone. There are black patches all over the screen with an error message at the top.

I'm led to believe that this is a motherboard issue and hence will need a replacement. I'm also told that the Apple techs couldn't make out the problem. I hope that this problem has been seen before and that it has an, affordable, solution.

Thank you.

I've seen that in relation to Gpu failures. If that's the case, if you try using a graphic intensive application, like unigine engine, the mac will shut down within a couple of minutes or so..you can give it a try for confirmation.

Dear Arbaman,

Thank you for the response, I will try it out. The first time I had it crash was when I was browsing the net while copying 2.5 GB of files. The weird thing is it works fine after a few attempts to boot.

Since the last crash I have used Adobe Photoshop, Premiere Pro and Indesign CC without any problem. I also tried Capture One 10 and it worked fine, although a bit slow. I should note that I didn't do any heavy duty editing or grading.

Regards
