Why does trackpad pointer behave erratically?

Despite trying various preferences, trackpad pointer either attaches to item,

does not respond, or marks page for deletion. Do not know if it is trackpad or, as Apple 'genius' suggested, a problem on the "motherboard?" Very afraid of major repair. Thanks for any advice.

Try to boot the macbook from an external source like your installation disk. If you have the same problem then replace the top case ($30 on ebay). Any liquid spilled on your MB ?

Though I did not spill liquid on MB, I cannot insert disk as MB stopped accepting CD/DVD months ago. I will check ebay for top case as two of you suggested that possibility. Will also keep working with mouse and see where that leads. Your input is very much appreciated.

Try using an external keyboard and mouse to rule out a logic board problem. In my shop, I would just attach a good top case to test if that needs replacing.

Thank you! Actually borrowed a mouse yesterday and it seems to work, though awkward. Will continue with it to make certain this will work as temporary fix. Much appreciated and will let you know what happens. Two of you suggested a good top case and will check into that as well. Leslie
