The battery indicator is completely gone in the menu bar

MacBook Pro 13" i7 mid 2012

A customer of mine replaced his own battery on his MacBook Pro and brought it in since it wasn't working without being plugged in now.

The charger's LED does not light up but will power the system immediately after plugging it in.

The fan is running unreasonably fast from startup and once you boot into it the device's battery indicator in the finder is completely missing. No red or black x on the battery, no not charging symbol, no warnings, just no indicator.

I've never seen anything like it before so I'm at a loss. Anyone more experienced that can lend a hand?

Things I've tried:

  • Inspected the board for any obvious physical or liquid damage, nothing outstanding
  • Reset the PMC and PRAM just in case.
  • Checked the logs to see if it got any data back from the battery, every recent log would have AC data but not battery.
  • I ordered another battery just in case it ends up being that simple but I've never had a case before where a battery entirely refuses to communicate with the laptop.

Thanks,

Derek

Sorry for the picture of a screen, it's what I got. The "data" it's reading isn't very reassuring.

Picture isn't showing up on Tinypic, I'll change the hosting site when I get a moment.

Answer this question I have this problem too

Is this a good question?

Lets see what this gem of an app tells us: coconut Battery. Post a screenshot of the main window so we can see.

I think there's a good chance that he bought a bad-quality 3rd party battery that has a malfunctioning chip inside, which is necessary for the motherboard to communicate with the battery through the SMC Data and Serial clock data lines. If a battery replacement doesn't fix the issue, then there is something wrong with one of the data lines, which could be the fault of something like a pull-up resistor.

Try this - Disconnect the battery and see if Coconut reports the charger.
