Why won't my Bluetooth speaker play songs

I got an iHome ibt29 for Christmas, and I was excited to try it out. I set it up and connected it with Bluetooth. My iPod said it was connected. When I tried to stream music, it would only play when I hit the volume button. When it stopped showing the volume, it turned off. Any help would be great! Thank you.
