How do I repair apps crashing, system freeze and Kernel panic?

My MacBook Pro has been freezing, apps crashing, I have been getting kernel panics and it runs hot from time to time.

A couple of weeks ago I checked the Hard Drive and Disc Utility told me it could not be repaired. So I thought (hoped) a new drive would resolve the issues. It did. For about a week. All the symptoms returned. I had to repair the HD yesterday and now again within 24 hours.

Some posts suggest it could be the logic board. Before I go purchase one I want make sure I have covered all my bases. What other suggestions does anyone have for me to check?

Since you are experiencing kernel panics I would carefully check out your memory and the memory sockets first. Remove all memory and install one at a time trying them in both sockets. Do this with both chips and you should find out if you have a bad stick or defective memory socket. If everything checks out get back to us. As to running hot check your fans for blockages of any kind. Good luck.

If the memory checks out looking at your other problems you may need to reinstall thermal paste on your heat sink. Lets try the easy first.

Thanks for your replies. I have only one memory chip in the machine. I tried it in the other socket to no avail. From your posts the next things to try would be a new memory stick and replacing the thermal paste? Do you know if thermal paste is available at local stores?

I downloaded a piece of software called memtest ( http://www.command-tab.com/2008/01/11/ho... ) and ran it in single user mode. My RAM chip failed miserably. Unable to find Mac memory locally I turned to Craigslist where I found compatible RAM for $20. It tested out fine and the machine seems to be running normally again. Thanks for your help. Case closed.
