Screen is completely dim.

Hello.

My screen suddenly turned all dim. I can see a bit if i point a flashlight at the screen.

Works with external display. (HDMI and apple tv wireless).

Was told by my local repair shop that it would cost 500$ and 5 weeks to fix it, which did not sound like something i'd like to do............

Anything i can do myself to fix this. I have great experience with repairing iPhone and iPads.

Thank you.

Answer this question I have this problem too

Will most likely be either the screen pcb, screen cable, LCD connector, backlight fuse, backlight IC, backlight IC feedback trace, or a combination (maybe even none of these).

If you have experience microsoldering, and have the required equipment, grab a schematic and board view for your model. If not, send it somewhere.

Well... Yes & No ;-{

You may have blown a fuse link seen here marked in Red:

But there is a reason it blow if that is the case. I would recommend you investigate the root cause before replacing the fuse link. You'll need either a micro soldering iron or heat gun as well as get the correct replacement part.

The other possibility here is the Buck Controller which powers the backlight LEDs has blown. I often see this happen when something was spilled into the keyboard. The chip is on the backside of the logic board seen here marked in Blue:

If you don't have the tools I would recommend you let someone deal with this.
