A disk read error occurred
Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart
the same thing keeps coming up after I restarted it

It could be a problem with memory cache not dumping on restart and is not getting a clean reboot , if so do the following.
1. Disconnect the power cord
2. Remove the battery
3. Hold down the power button for 30 seconds, then release for 30 sec and then hold down for another 30sec
4. Plug in power; replace battery and power on laptop.

Hi, What OS is installed in the laptop?

This sounds like either to boot record has become corrupt and/or the hard disk is failing. Without knowing what OS is installed on the laptop all I can suggest is it may be possible to repair with your system recovery media if you created it, or with an OS installation disk. If this fails it's likely a mechanical failure in the hard disk it's self, meaning the hard disk will need to be replaced and the OS restored or reinstalled.
