Disabling Automatic Turn On Feature, Nikon 1 J1?

I have a Nikon 1 J1. I can no longer use it because of the automatic power-on feature.

Whenever any amount of pressure is put on the lens, the camera automatically turns on. This makes it impossible to carry around because the camera powers up any time you touch or bump the thing, and the battery is constantly dying on me. The only way of using it is to remove and replace the battery each time I want to take a picture -- which is obviously very impractical.

I wrote to Nikon once about this, and they told me that the camera was intentionally designed this way, and nothing can be done about it. Which is totally ridiculous.

Is there any way to DISABLE this automatic-on feature?

I finally had to send the camera in to Nikon with a note explaining exactly what the problem was. I'm not sure what they did, but so far the problem has gone away. The auto-on feature is still there, but it's no longer so touchy.

They did not charge me.
